How to Train a Tiger

His predilections pronounce themselves

With a Parisian accent

Incongruent with his street urchin origins

As he climbs fences and forages

For wild cards and weak chinned women

These are the sort of whores that belong

On sale at the dollar store

Real dubious, dime-a-dozen denizens

The just what you’d expect

When expectations are circumspect

Backwash betties that manifest

At the bottom of brown bottles

Circled by wolves

Projecting their manic daddy-issues

Mercury-in-retrograde antics

Uncouth in Duluth

Thirsty in Jersey

Fuck-shit bitchiness on repeat

But he says they keep him warm

When he isn’t obliterating the bridges

He’s been lent to repent

I’m the autumn and the caviar

The high caliber ammunition

That he can’t afford

And I can’t fix his suspicious ambitions

Or fight the phantom overwrites

In his kisses

I tense in every sense in his presence

I can taste the pulp fictions

Affixed to the tip

And I can’t fake the friction as he drifts

His fingers across my lips

He lets me taste the spaces

He’s dampening, dismantling

And these impromptu parades

Are just a bipolar August

Awaiting another arbitrary cosmic lottery

It’s the same chaotic refrain

As I feign how to train

A traumatized tiger

Into pacing heart shapes

In his boxcar cage

    1. Delayed reply but needed a moment to properly respond to this feedback. A “decadent entry nestled between Bowie and Bladerunner.” Wow, Rob. I wouldnt mind these words etched on my tombstone someday! To me this is incredibly high praise. I’m wildly flattered. And humbled. And so impressed by your description. It captures everything I wanted for this poem. Thank you so much, Dapper one, for making my whole week. 👏🏻♟🐅🖤

  1. Your voice is always soothing and felt the emotion cut in the depths of truth. Also, the music composition with your words and voice are brilliantly incredible. I love this. 🙂

P.S Yesterday afternoon…I started my first ‘Instagram account’. It’s specifically only for my short obscure poems.

    My Instagram name is: @charliezero7.

Thank you so much for your ever supportive and flattering responses to my work. I really enjoyed this piece for a myriad of reasons. It was particularly interesting to compose and then build an aesthetic around it. As always your response caused me to blush. ♥️♟🗝💀

  2. I liked this poem. Many had attempted to tame a tiger. Most were ate by the tiger. Better to befriend a tiger and hope. They have a full belly. Hello dear Poet. I hope you are doing well. Have some fun and be safe.

  3. I LOVE THIS!!!!!! What a masterpiece!! I swear, your writing brings me to tears due to its utter brilliance!! I just loved this–it took me far away into some dark alley somewhere where I watched this all unfold. I could almost smell and taste this poem.

    1. You are I exist in this place where we see love and attraction very similarly… part fantasy fairytale, part film noir… both in metaphors of war and midnight gardens… I experience your work very similarly as you describe experiencing my own. Very visceral. As if I possess the words. Or perhaps they possess me. ❤ ❤ ❤
