Signal Flares

All this time lead to believe

That butterflies frantic

Within the abdomen

Was a thing of beauty

That electrical sizzle

Within the sinews

Was a kind of virtue

When the malicious truth

In the blooming

Of those pupils

Was not of love

Palpably forming

It was our hearts

Issuing a stark warning

It was our instincts

Brightest signal flares

Streaking across

Our minds skies, shrieking

Beware, you fool, beware!”

  1. Ooh this is dark, April! The kind of dark that my blog gravitates toward, the kind that I find at the bottom of my cup of tea when I’ve unraveled all my thoughts. Life is always sending warning flares but we tend to romanticize them…and I am no less a sucker for those butterflies than the next fool in love. Beautiful and lethal, you and your poetry.

    1. This comment has me naked on cloud nine – counting bullets and narrowing my
scope. You have this uncanny way of making me feel like a literal warrior goddess and I absolutely love you for it, Larisa! It is indeed an ominous sentiment – and truth it always darker than fiction! I am drawn to your poetry for that line you tow. Fearless, beautiful. Your remarks get me high each and every time. Thank you so much for that. 🖤🦋
