Contrary to Coda

She longed for words

Fearless in their love—

No, not their love—

Fearless in their loyalty

To their meanings

Modus operandi impetus

Contrary to coda

Regardless of apology

Ciphers that take no prisoners

Hindsight thrust like fists

From minds to mouths

Wisdom pressed like lips

From the pulse to the pen

The doctrine that hesitance

Is a hinderance more oft than not

Words immune to the disease

Of abstraction

Warnings that do not waver

Incorruptible in their savagery

Compassions absent

Of saccharine distractions

Bravery exemplary

Of homing pigeons and apostles

Effigies and erotic poets

Cher Ami and Saint Anthony

Guy Fawkes and Anais Nin

  1. Wow…just wow 😮 where do I even begin?

This was so smooth, I think of a butterscotch whiskey or something else entirely intangible. I loved so many lines in this piece, both on their own and standing together 😭

    “Wisdom pressed like lips

From the pulse to the pen”

The imagery this invoked..dizzying in its sublime beauty.

“Contrary to coda” reminded me of my most favorite line ever, “contrary to dove” and that line still brings me to my knees. What a gorgeous maelstrom of emotions this was, I..bow down before you, Queen 👑💐

    1. Holy shit… Larisa. I am officially speechless.

I can’t even gather my thoughts for longer than a moment to respond to praise on this level. I am ecstatic, emotional and so grateful. With these words you have me goosebumps, tears forming at the edges of my eyes, my cheeks are flushed like pinched peonies. Thank you. I …. just. Thank you. Thank you so much. You make me feel utterly understood and that’s indescribable. You are precious to me and your mind seems endlessly in rhythm with my own. I feel so blessed to call you my friend. And.

      My fellow Queen. ♥️👑

  2. I listened and read it at the same time. It started off like film noir, a voice-over with the piano playing in a smoke filled room, forever stained with the aroma of a strange mixture of alcohols. Brilliantly, the cadence picked up, almost like a bolero, to it’s conclusion. Simply brilliant, April! ❤

    1. Oh Rob. I want to describe how this comment makes me feel but it’s nearly impossible. I am beyond enamored with your references (so intuitively!) to some of my (our) aesthetic and musical inspirations! Film noir into a thrilling crescendo… a bolero specifically. (Ravel is one of my favorite composers!)

This comment … is what’s simply brilliant, my dapper one. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Xoxo 💋

    1. I am not worthy of such a gorgeous compliment but it made me smile nevertheless, Charlie. I would absolutely love the chance to do something like that some day. ♥️ thank you for making me feel so lovely
