the residency of sorrow

the residency of sorrow

an unwanted housewarming

guests separated by six degrees

brought together to gaze down

a six foot depth

dressed in johnny cash funeral black

bearing gifts of

cala lillies and casseroles

they mill in the peripheral

the tendrils of a weeping willow

framing the hollow

a beautiful kind of heart break

an aching in the marrow

memories ignited like

want-ad kindling

a collective inhalation

carbon monoxide melancholy

that inspires the timeless melody

of a patsy cline song

that plays on the mind’s

record player

a bittersweet soundtrack

a constant reminder

of yesterday’s joy

of today’s pain

and tomorrow’s redemption

"She would fill endless notebooks with stories about the characters in her life, their impressions, words, friends, lovers, inspirations, fantasies. She spent her days dreaming up worlds where they fit together in visions; the if only, the never again, the someday. Those who knew her best would describe her as a creature with a clear and sometimes painful sense of herself; furious with ideas and convictions, to a point that she frightened love away with discernment and a relentless strength of character."
